Create a Fraction Monster

Create your own characterful Fraction Monster

Use rubbish materials from your recycling bin, or simple plain paper!

After a successful beach clean, what can the Maths Mates do with all the rubbish they've collected?

Fraction Fox has an idea! The Maths Mates gather all the rubbish and make Fraction Monsters!

By taking each piece of rubbish and dividing it into equal parts – halves, thirds, quarters, fifths, sixths… (can you think of anymore?) – they were able to build heads, bodies, arms and legs!

Fractions are equally divided parts of a whole (shape or number).

With this activity you will be physically dividing shapes into different fractions, working with the ones you know, and maybe some fractions that are new!

This activity is part of Summer Fun with the Maths Mates, a creative maths programme with a fun pirate adventure theme. There are lots of activities to try including craft, construction, puzzles, baking, maps and games. The activities all have different themes and explore a range of mathematical ideas.

It is ideal for families to try at home during the summer holidays. Play leaders can also use the activities with children at holiday clubs or summer schemes.
